Unlock Democracy: oppose 42 days - donate now!
Sun 29th Jun 2008 – (0 Comments)
Last week (Monday 23rd) Unlock Democracy announced their plans to make the best use of the Haltemprice and Howden by-election, and that is to raise as much money as they can to raise awareness about the illiberal 42 day detention without charge legislation. Asking for £20 ideally they would be happy to get as much as possible as they have worked out they need £5,000 to provide enough literature and bodies on the ground to ensure that all the facts are out in the open for people to make an informed decision come election day, on July 10th.
The reason this is important is that Unlock Democracy aren't backing a specific candidate, they're not lending weight to David Davis or Shan Oakes (for the Greens), they simply want people to get out their and vote...vote for anyone that is standing on the basis of stopping erosion of our civil liberties. They understand no result is worthwhile without the turnout being high in the constituency, and that this is also an opportune time to ground the debate in reality.
This is a really worthy cause to give money to. If you usually put a tenner in to the arms of a charity spending 40% of it's donations on chuggers then please consider this time instead giving it to Unlock Democracy to make a difference to our national civil liberties. Donate now!
