I thoroughly enjoyed the Beijing olympics this year, I thought it was an amazing showcase of worldwide talent and really made me feel that we are all part of one world. Aside from a couple of incidents and controversies (how exactly did Beth Tweddle not win a medal?), it was an astounding event that was something everyone could be proud of. And of course, the main talking point was the ceremonies, the lavish, colourful and regimented displays of culture and personality that China put on. Who, we asked ourselves, could possibly top that? Well today we found out, the IPC can put on a fine show in collaboration with the Chinese...a massive statement to the olympians from the paralympians that anything you can do, we can certainly do better.

The government is contemplating a total ban on all Zimbabwean sportsmen and women from entering the country to play sport in an effort to try and sway the country in to not re-electing their leader Robert Mugabe. Noble in intention perhaps, but just what is the point of it, and what would it really achieve?

Politalks 4 is now up! This week we look at terrorism and how torture fits in with that particular problem, in particular George Bush's views on waterboarding. There is also a look at interesting ideas such as soldiers becoming teachers and frankly bizarre educational policy. Steven Spielberg pulling out of his previous role with China for the upcoming Olympics this year has sparked a massive rise in the debate over whether we should be acknowledging the 2008 Olympics at all. China have of course defended their seemingly abhorrent record on humanitarian issues by deflecting the issue of their involvement in funding a tyrannical government in the Sudan by stating that it really isn't their fault it's happening.

But really, China's record from our ethical perspective is certainly not great, and their funding of various nations with arms and giving them some level of financial security is not in line with what we in the West would say is the correct thing to do, but is this enough to pull a boycott on the event?
