Congratulations go to David Davis for winning the Haltemprice and Howden by-election, but more than that congratulations go to him for turning the Tabloids on to civil liberties for at least a while, for enabling a poll that debunks Brown's "public support" myth, and for helping us keep this issue alive!

Unfortunately a lot of people are nitpicking, as you can imagine. The turnout was 35%, which is less than recent by-elections that had money absolutely thrown at them by all three big parties due to the importance they stood for in an atmosphere of a receding Labour party. However it is still pretty normal for a by-election, especially considering the weather (poured it down), the fact only one of the major parties stood, that the field was split with ridiculous candidates and that it was all fought over one issue...42 days.

Some seem to wish to call it a waste of money since is cost £200k, in doing so play in to Labour's arguments despite supposedly being against 42 day legislation. I say that given it would cost us £42k every time someone innocent was held for 42 days it will probably help save us money in the long run! Not to mention that £200k is a very small amount of money, and for the help it's given to highlighting this alongside the important debate that greatly talked down the legislation in the Lords I believe it's worth every penny.

The time now is one to gather ourselves again. Parliamentary recess is on its way and this issue isn't going to be killed over night now, not unless Brown decides against character to pull the legislation, hopefully we can stave off the partisan and moronic nonsense creeping in to the campaign and realign it on the true issues and the real fight taking the very apparent positives of the last month forward with us.
