Across the blogosphere the big question over the last few days has been "will you or won't you?", of course in reference to "backing David Davis" in his by-election campaign.

The political scene seems split, those that supported 42 days are joined by those that were against it as old partisan divisions resurface, the saddest reality being that principles come after party colours no matter how much those colours have run.

So where will I stand? Well I am unashamedly middle of the road when it comes to politics and I have to say that this kind of "stunt" (as Gordon Brown wishes to paint it) is exactly up my street. After Labour's woeful performance punctuated by the 42 day legislation I am extremely grateful that someone like David Davis is willing to stand up and make a principled point to keep this debate from dying.

Some may say it is indeed a stunt, that it is a manner for David to pull some support from within the party, to take another step in an internal power struggle. Others say that it's just a tory trying to capitalise at another Labour low point.

All I know is that this issue can be as singular and focused as we make it. Currently the liberals amongst us are in a flummox and wonder how they'll walk the tight-rope between not endorsing a supposedly gay hating (according to voting record), capital punishment seeking, xenophobe, and not supporting a government that has completely abandoned their ideals.

But we're getting there, it's starting to all come in to focus. Some partisan walls are actually beginning to fall and people are starting to think more objectively.

I will say well done to David Davis...but ultimately I'm too far away to do anything other than do so here. The fact is the man will win his by-election regardless, but it is up to us to keep the agenda on our civil liberties and specifically against the atrocious 42 day legislation. Does this mean I'm an immigrant bashing, benefit hater too? No, I too would never vote for a Tory, but I will pat him on the back as I join others riding on top of it for a greater cause.
