How much money would it take for you to agree that it's no big deal to be locked up, lose your job, have your family broken apart, to not be earning for over a month, to have your personal belongings sifted through and investigated , to become a terrorist in the eyes of any person that knows of your detention, and this is all assuming (god forbid) the tabloids don't find out your situation and delve in to your life in their usual hap-hazard style?

Well according to the BBC the government is ready to set that price to £3,000 a day after you've been detained for 28 days but not charged.

This is despicable on a few levels. First of all lets get the selfish reasoning out of the way. Why is it that we tax payers should pay for the hunches of the police? One way or another money is going to be diverted from needy causes to pay people compensation for being locked up without charge. This seems like a very ill-thought out situation. Secondly it will no doubt mean that the money for compensations would be diverted from the police. While this sounds like a good safety loop it makes you wonder why the police would therefore ever use more than 28 days? What is it exactly that the Home Office wanted this legislation for in the first place, because I could have swore it was to detain people until the police were sure they could charge them...this move could return the legislation to a point where knowing a charge is possible is the only factor in extending detention.

This is good news, if it deters detention...but the fact is that it would still allow people to be detained when potentially innocent for up to 42 days, no matter how much that is hidden by concession after concession. And thus back to my original point, how much money is enough? £42,000 sounds like a lot of money but is it enough to remove the stigma from your character, to rebuild your life back to normality and carry on as if nothing has happened? I would say that's an extremely hard case to make.

What next, free Disney land tickets? A giant cookie? This legislation has now completely descended in to desperation and has lost sight of what it once was. No wonder everyone from all quarters are jumping ship and showing their opposition.
