Brown loves the idea, Jacqui Smith seems to have been delivered to blight us on this planet solely because of her affinity to ideas like 42 days, and a policeman that thinks it is ok to abandon innocent until proven guilty because of some pictures of white powder is ready to back it to the hilt. But in reality, who else is there?

The Police were widely thought to have been for these proposals yet more and more are coming out of the woodwork to denounce the plans one way or another. If they even agree with the idea of 42 day detention, they are bewildered by how convoluted the Labour plans have become. Right wing politicians don't want it any more than left wing ones, the MI5 has washed its hands of the whole subject and the last Tory Prime Minister thinks it'll cause more problems than it solves.

If it wasn't enough to kill this legislation when Lord Goldsmith condemned the plans, when high level prosecutor after prosecutor stated their opposition, and after the police themselves showed no favour for the plans, surely the fact that both a committee set up to review the legislation and a committee on human rights both stand quite angrily against the 42 day plan.

In fact it is a particular talent of this Labour Government to ignore independent advice so no-one should be too surprised. They talk a lot about reviewing and "getting it right" but seem to do so without any objective input whatsoever. Could it be that Brown is thinking his route to retaining power is by standing up against the "human rights" argument to occupy traditional right wing territory on "human rights only benefit criminals" rhetoric? Combined with the fact that it will only be Muslim's that will get targeted with this legislation we can surely be forgiven for thinking Brown's target audience and demographic for the next election is the Daily Express readership.

Of course this article asks who does support the measures and, discounting the MPs that will vote for it in some form or another through fear of further weakening their party, the answer would be that aside from those mentioned in the first paragraph, the only other people to accept these plans are the extremely Labour sympathetic British Muslim Forum. It really isn't a shock that the group that stumbled over themselves in fear of reprisals from the July 7th bombing to issue a Fatwa against suicide bombings would bow down to the pressure from the government to back these plans. But this is pretty much the problem with this country on these issues isn't it? A government that wants to foist illiberal bullshit on us, and a public that seems to be so bought in to the ter-rhetoric that they are happy to bend over and take it.

The reason I say this is of course based on the most recent poll that seems to back the idea that the public want the extension to the 42 day limit (despite opposition shown in a YouGov poll recently), though if you look at the question it doesn't really offer any alternative options. Of course people don't disagree with increasing home security against terrorist attacks, but does that mean they think 42 days is the best option? The Yougov/Liberty poll suggests not.
