Bit of a round-up: injustice, over-reaction and under-representation

Fri 7th Mar 2008 – (0 Comments)

Here again I find myself in a situation with a few subjects I want to touch on but not really wanting to devote entire posts to each of them at this time. So this time the three subjects are BBC2's White season, your DNA and how little you need to do to give the police reason to put it on a database, and a rather sickening situation of trying to send an Iranian kid back to Iran where he is almost certain to be executed.

First that latter story because I feel it's the most important. I first saw it on Harry's Place and I honestly can't believe my eyes. What reason could the immigration office ever have for ignoring this persons obvious plight? His gay partner in Iran was interrogated and then executed for such a "crime" as being homosexual, and now our government in our name wishes to send this person back to his almost certain death.

I have to echo Brett's sentiment that this is yet another thing that you need to write to your MP about, currently the person in question has actually fled to Europe to keep away from us because he now fears our actions as much as the Iranians due to the ultimate outcome. Do we really want to be feared as much as Iranians when it comes to persecution? I hope not.

Perhaps more light-heartedly is the story of a guy failing to pay for a £2.40 rail ticket, the equivalent of an outer to inner city journey, being arrested by British Transport Police and then having his DNA and fingerprints taken to be put on record. So there you have it, the state can take your DNA to keep for the mere price of a short train journey ticket. I suppose it is one way to stop fare dodgers wassat

Finally there's the issue of under-representation, or at least percieved under-representation, in our white working class communities. pandering to the BNP elements in our society is not something that I really expected the BBC to do, but then I suppose fascists pay license fee's too. Chicken Yoghurt has already written well on this subject so I will just add that I think this season of programs will only further entrench in some peoples minds the fallacies about immigrants and somehow legitimise what are, I feel, mostly illegitimate feelings on behalf of the white population of Britain. I am willing to be swayed and will probably watch the programs, but I'm not holding my breath.

Latest Politalks:

So what the hell is going on, Labour are slumping in the polls and yet those most naturally in their shadow able to take their place (the Lib Dems) are failing to capitalise in the polls. And even though the Tories are enjoying high times so much they must think it's the 80's all over again (in more ways than one) they have failed to deliver one serious or credible attack against the government that would show them to be the true heir's to the throne. So to speak. Anyway, on with this weeks Politalks. NSFW as usual, transcript can be found if you go through to read more!
