Despite this event now seemingly sapping my life from my very body I for some reason decide to persevere in watching it. I shall keep it, and thus the pain, brief...though an issue was raised during the event around referendums and I shall be visiting that subject tomorrow. But for today, my god...it might not have been the worse PMQs but it was close.

Last week was pretty dire, though not in essence bad...just weird. The whole process saw Gordon Brown actually look competent though hardly through his own prowess, of which we can all agree he has none, but through poor choices of questions and opportunities for cheap shots. This week the subject was pretty much exclusively the EU treaty, yet a couple of gems of questions managed to get through that I am sure constituencies of the MPs asking them will be grateful to have had the opportunity to ask.

Just to highlight those questions quickly, one was regarding funding of hospices which Brown could only give humble agreement to discuss since government only funds a third of all hospices; another was regarding security around open prisons due to the prison population of the country, and also an absolutely perfect question from David Marshall about what the PM plans to do about fuel companies increasing prices and their profits. Furthermore Mr Marshall suggested that a windfall levy be imposed on these companies profits to fund a £200 increase in the winter fuel allowance next winter.

Unfortunately the response to this question wasn't perfect, as he ignored the point made about winter fuel allowance and continuing to persist that the current winter fuel allowance, that leaves pensioners in the same position they were in BEFORE the winter fuel allowance was implemented due to price rises, is enough. I find this reprehensible but it is clear that spending money on keeping our pensioners from dying is less important than creating a national ID database.

And the poor answers didn't stop there, apparently stating that a vote would be given to the public on the Euro if necessary, or the constitutional treaty...it seems that Gordon wishes to split hairs and make it sound like he's in favour of referendums without ever needing to give one. Certainly we're still waiting on the electoral reform referendum.

This stance however was mimicked in a question by Geraldine Smith that suggested that a referendum on the EU treaty would be "abrogating its responsibilities". It is this subject that I will leave for today and discuss more tomorrow.

Both Cameron and Clegg attacked on the issue of the EU referendum, Cameron obviously on the upcoming debate and Clegg on his parties defeat on an "in or out" referendum. Again it was interesting to hear that Brown both believes that a 1975 referendum is enough to show public opinion yet that holding another referendum is no way to plan for the future. It would seem that generational change in public opinion is deemed to be worthless when it comes to this issue.

Cameron of course used his time for a second question, and it is clear he intends to paint the government as being scandalous, corrupt and untrustworthy...something that certainly worked against the Tories in the past, though perhaps with a bit more credibility...and asked what the PM thought about Ken Livingstone saying he would reappoint Lee Jasper, a person who resigned because of an impending police investigation in to his actions.

The answer was typical Brown as he completely avoided answering the question and instead told parliament what it already knew, simply that Mr Jasper had resigned. Then, obviously feeling that the question hit a bit too close to home used his opportunity to attack Boris Johnson. Something tells me that such an attack will only give Boris more supporters rather than wake people up

All in all It was more of the same, though Brown answered a few more questions. God knows why those questions get a serious answer when questions about dying pensioners are so readily shrugged off but then I don't know what the priorities of the PM are.

Cameron certainly came out on top this week though once again, as with many weeks past, that isn't saying much whatsoever.
