While I am on the theme already tonight of BBC shoddy reporting (seems to occur like buses) I also would like to highlight this article about birth rates in the UK and the contribution of immigrants to this. The BBC reports there has been a 77% increase in the birthrate of children to foreign born mothers. It is a shame that amongst all of this reporting, however, has been on the level of impact this increase has rather than why the impact is so much of a problem.

I have to ask though what the big deal is. Higher birth rate has to in turn convey some benefits to long term economy. It has long been said that younger populations help maintain a growth economy and higher birthrates are the only way to achieve this, in fact without migrants having babies we would be falling in to a predicted slump economically as our population grows older.

Some time ago when this story was first properly rolled out someone made a very valid point, and that was that we never hear of transport networks or such similar private organisations complain about the burden that immigrants put upon them. These businesses respond to the market and adapt, yet the belief of some people in this country and the media, ironically generally the same people that believe in privatisation of everything, is that it is immigrants to blame for stories like these and not the NHS systems that are inherently failing to adapt.

But this isn't how the BBC is wishing to present the story, no, this is about the "impact of immigration" according to the news at ten, and the "problems" that it is causing the NHS. I personally didn't realise the NHS was so up the creek without a paddle that they have also completely abandoned the ability to look at national trends and realise just how precedented these "unprecedented" changes in rates are. If only the organisation could open it's eyes and realise how alienating it's statements are to the people that are actually helping lay the foundations of the UK's economic future, and that pandering the the more "BNP" type mentality is never a precisely ethical thing to do.
